LIVE JAZZ IN SOHO CLUB RONNIE SCOTT’s
Ronnie Scott’s is the institution in London for live jazz. The jazz club opened its door back in 1959. Originally home in the basement at 39 Gerrard Street in Soho, London, founded by musicians Ronnie Scott and Pete King.
In 1965 the club moved into a larger venue at 47 Frith Street but remained in London’s Soho. The ‘Old Place’ was kept in operation until the lease ran out in 1967.
Zoot Sims was the club’s first transatlantic performing guest in 1962, followed by many prestigious artists and jazz legends such as:
- Chet Baker
- Nina Simone
- Curtis Mayfield
- Ella Fitzgerald
- Stacey Kent
- Jamie Cullum
- Bobby Broom
- Madeleine Peyroux
- Chick Corea
- Cassandra Wilson
- Katie Melua
- Dianne Reeves
- Anita O’Day
- Wynton Marsalis
- Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix’s gave his final public performance with the American Band ‘War’ at Ronnie Scott’s in 1970. The Seattle born legendary guitarist Hendrix died after a party in London in 1970.
Ronnie Scott was running the club with his partner Pete King until Scott’s dead in 1996. King continued to run the club for a further nine years before selling the club to theatre impresario Sally Greene and philanthropist Michael Watt in June 2005.
Managing Director Simone Cooke joined the Ronnie Scott’s in April 2008.
In 2009 the Soho Jazz club Ronnie Scott’s was named by the Brecon Jazz Festival as one of 12 venues that had made the most important contributions to jazz music in UK, and finished third in the voting for the final award.
The club established the record label ‘Ronnie Scott’s Jazz House” in 1978, which issued live performances from the club and new recordings.
Ronnie Scott’s still features current and upcoming artists and has added a membership with priority information and advanced notice on upcoming acts. Members plus 3 guests have free entrance from Monday till Thursday after 11pm, plus 1 guest on Friday and Saturday after 1am. Additional advantages are included in the membership such as further discounts, queue jumping (which can save an hour queuing in the line!) and members-only events.
